What you're attempting to do is adding the neighboring notes and alter the rhythm on the original melody range. Remember in jazz improvisation there's no one way to go about it. jazz education is a very simple way to get started. Experiment with different tunes on jazz CDs. Use your ear canal to dictate what notes to work with. Soon enough you will discover other ways to help improvise.
